Platypus Tri Camp – May 28-29, 2011

Left to right: Janice Gaudet, Nadine Jewer, Therese O'Neill, Matthias Jaepel

Super commitment and dedication moved us along while we waited for the sun. Nice progress, tough workouts and – indeed – warm lake water !!! made this training camp, again, a success.

Evenings were short due to fatigue, but we shared some nice meals and best coffee.

Congrats to all participants.

Hey Guys,

Super training last night, appreciate your commitment.

The big points were:  stride to breathing rhythm, learn to pace yourself using your breathing/stride correlation, learn to train right, leave your ego in the locker room.

Cheers,

Matthias

65 is a great age to do a triathlon!

Gordon completed his 750 m swim, 20 km bike & 5 km run in 1:28:53.  After going through cardio surgery, and having only learnt how to swim 2 years ago, the accomplishment is even more impressive.

The entire triathlon was done within the Platypus METT facility, starting out in the building’s pool.

The 4th lake swim of the year was tremendous—a nice structural work-out, one and a half hours long.  It was all around a good evening of training. Chocolate lake was warm with mist over the water.

Matthias dancing?? :-)

We’re looking forward to our class next week.

See you all then!

Kearney Lake Swimmers

Last night’s lake training (6:15 pm to 7:45 pm) was tough. The lake wasn’t as warm as MacKay Lake, where we hold our training camps near Shelburne, but we had a well structured evening with fast sprints, hunts and some distance work. Despite Carol Anne’s tackle of Matthias, he managed to escape her interference and finished, enabling his team to win the event. All in all, it was a great evening.

Grrrr-rrrrr... :)

A nice close to a nice evening

We’ll see everyone soon!

For the lake swim of 22 June, we will be swimming at Kearney Lake. Carol Anne will be there to meet you or you can ride with Matthias who will be leaving Centennial Pool at 5:45pm. Have a great swim!

June’s Tri Camp took place the weekend of 18 June. All of us had a tremendous time. It was an ideal Tri training camp in that it was tough with some big learning points but we also had fun and some really good food. Unlike the first Tri camp of the season, when it rained, the second camp came with very hot weather. All participants were truly committed to doing their best and didn’t let the hot weather bother them too much. Karen, on the other hand, was less than speedy.

:)

Debi and Janice relaxing before the swimming drills on Saturday

We worked on bike handling, mounting and dismounting and the drills went well. We also had a tough swim workout, a 110 km bike ride in 35º to 40º heat (yikes!) on Saturday that was fraught with tire problems. The bad tire juju descended on both Janice and Jeff on two different days! It was not a good way to find out the bike store in Shelburne had closed for good!

We had 3 participants for this camp:

Jeffrey is a perfect training companion—he is tough on the turf and an exquisite chef at meal times. Yum.

Jeff transitioning from swimming to the bike

Chef Jeff

Janice is extremely courageous. This was only her second tri camp ever and she really pushed herself with very satisfying results. Go Janice! (And, we all loved her coffee!)

Janice finishing her last segment of the weekend. Yay!

Debi shone the most when she stayed by Janice’s side on our long, hot bike ride on Saturday and during the multi-brick transitions on Sunday—she performed the fastest transitions so far this year.

We also had the company of three dogs—Jeff’s Dexter and Karen’s Toots and Gracie. Unlike the first Tri Camp, when Toots suffered heatstroke, this time, under orders from Dr. Heather, Toots was hosed off several times during the day and all was well. Dexter is the more talented of the bunch as he picked up and carried his leash when he wanted a walk and he even carried out his own garbage!

Good times were had in the kitchen during meals. Especially interesting was Matthias’ curious mixture of orange juice and ice cream mixed in a teeny bit of beer. It seems he was desperate for any kind of nutrition after spending the day in the heat on his feet and his bicycle and those three things were handy!

It was an achingly hot weekend and by the time the participants left to go home, they knew they had given it their all. Well done, everyone!!

June 15th brought our second lake swim of the season at Chocolate Lake.

It was a nice training session: structured and lots of fun. 12 people were there in total—the babies and Janice Gaudet… And, there was a good performance by Peter Theriault and Richard (Eric) Woodburn.

We’re looking forward to next week!

The first Tri Camp of the season was held at Kinloch, near Shelburne, Nova Scotia, during the weekend of 28 May. Everyone agreed it was a great success. See Laura Keefe’s Blog Entry for details.
